The success of the #Shadow lead to #Street&Smith to create a new pulp hero with #DocSavage, first appearing in "Doc Savage Magazine" on March of 1933. Written by #LesterDent, he would become a chief inspiration for later comic book superheroes like #Superman, #Mr.Fantastic and #TomStrong.

Lester Dent, born 121 years ago today on October 12, 1904. Author of nearly 160 Doc Savage pulp novels between 1933 and 1949. To say he invented the concept of the superhero would be an overstatement, but he certainly helped define the parameters.

Why "Bronze?"
A Flearunner recently asked
"Why does Doc have bronzed skin -- canonically?"

Well, in the original Doc Savage novella
by John Nanovic and Henry Ralston
(Doc Savage - Supreme Adventurer) we have this:

"The skin was of a healthy bronze color, bespeaking of long years spent beneath tropic suns and northern skies, of an active, exhilarating life of a man of action and adventure."

Lester Dent, the primary Doc Savage author,
wrote in his notes:

"Fine and firm and perfect as skin ever was. A skin that radiates Doc's perfect health. It, too, is bronze, made so by the elements of innumerable climes. Doc's skin has the unusual quality of not reacting to the elements---that is, it don't get red in the wind, it don't sunburn."

Remind you of anyone you know?

Why was Doc Savage called "The Man of Bronze?" Short answer: because of his skin. And why was his skin "bronze?"

Was The Gold Ogre (Doc Savage Magazine May 1939) intended to serve as a spin-off for a new magazine? I don't believe so and here is why...

Lester Dent's notes about Doc Savage's whistle sound or his trill.

Trilling was an unusual trait for Doc Savage. For decades Doc fans have discussed what it sounded like. Many imagine it sounded like a tropical bird. In today's card we offer Lester Dent's notes about what he called "The Whistle-Sound."

On this day in 1932 Lester Dent received his first check for a Doc Savage novel. Dent was never paid per word for the novels, but always a flat rate.
