I decided to move the Gatehouse more towards the centre. This was to stop the middle of the sketch feeling blocked off from the viewer. In the second sketch I also decided to move Lewes Castle, this will help give more of a sense of the hill going up to the castle.

A very large mound of earth indeed, topped by an angular stone tower and several trees. It is late winter and the scene is stark, with little growth and a gloomy sky.

The south-western motte at #LewesCastle, #Sussex (yes, there are two). It is a socking great thing, still mightily impressive more than 900 years after it was constructed and despite some Georgian tinkering and a partial collapse. #Castles #MotteMonday Pic my own, from 2016.

Didn’t get a chance to go inside, but I do love an impressive castle. Built following the Battle of Hastings, Lewes Castle is a 1000-year-old Norman fortress constructed originally by supporters of William the Conqueror. #lewescastle

A photograph of a medieval reenactment group in front of the Barbican at Lewes Castle. There are 12 people arranged in two rows, wearing various forms of medieval clothing. The most prominent is the knight in the middle of the arrangement, who is wearing a blue and yellow checked surcoat & helmet over a suit of maille. It is a sunny day with a blue sky, and the ground is green grass. Two people are carrying flags on flagpoles, one flag is blue and yellow checkered, the other is red with a white chevron. There are six shields in the picture, three of which are blue and yellow checked, one is red and yellow squares, and one is red with a white chevron.

A view of the town of Lewes. Below in the centre is a tower of the castle. Dotted around are houses. The sky is a lovely blue with white clouds. Stretched in the background are green fields.

An utterly wonderful bank holiday spent with the 3 youngest girls. We’re going to hurt tomorrow having carried them up stairs but feel heroic to get where we did with them. #LewesCastle #Castle

Even slight issue with car breaking down didn’t spoil it. Thank you AA for getting there within 20mins!
