Protecting Neighbourhood Retail: Save Our Shops

Councillor James Pasternak from the neighbourhood to our west has launched
a campaign that may be of interest to residents in our community who rely on
nearby retail services.

The proposal for 75 Billy Bishop Way would replace essential neighbourhood
retail with five towers reaching up to 49 storeys. Beyond the immediate impact
on the Wilson community, there are broader concerns about the precedent
rezoning could create.

When land is rezoned, its value often increases instantly. This can place
important amenities and businesses at risk as redevelopment pressures grow. A
similar issue is currently emerging near the Ontario Food Terminal, where a
development application could threaten the terminal and the surrounding
businesses that form a critical ecosystem supporting food distribution across
Ontario.

Changes like this can also create cascading pressure on other important sites,
including nearby retail hubs such as the Costco Wholesale — Billy Bishop
Way. If this issue matters to you, please consider learning more about
Councillor Pasternak’s campaign and supporting the effort.

Lily Cheng in #Willowdale is again advocating against new housing next to a subway station

According to her, adding 2000 new residents to the neighborhood would be a risk to lose the Costco (???). As if adding new people to the neighborhood would make […]

Willowdale Community Survey: Neighbourhood Retail and Services The City of Toronto is reviewing how small-scale retail and services—like cafés, corner shops, and community spaces—can better serve residents in neighbourhoods. This work is part of the Expanding Housing Options in Neighbourhoods (EHON) initiative. You can review the report from staff to Planning and Housing Committee on Nov 30th, by clicking here. Your feedback will help Councillor Cheng’s office understand what types of neighbourhood retail and services matter most to Willowdale residents and where they should be located. This short survey will take about 5 minutes to complete.

#Willowdale tell your councillor Lily Cheng what you think of small retail stores in your neighborhood

A Balanced View on Transit and Parking

Despite South Korea’s world-class public transit system, cars still play an essential role in daily life, and that’s okay. Unlike Toronto, which struggles with underdeveloped transit while aggressively reducing car infrastructure, Korea embraces a multi-modal future. Wide roads accommodate cars, dedicated bus lanes, and bike paths, all without sacrificing one for the other. One standout example was a sleek, modern parking structure that reminded me of the importance of parking availability in supporting our local businesses in a future, denser Willowdale.

Lily Cheng, NIMBY councillor of #Willowdale in Toronto went to South Korea.

What did she learn? She learned about sleek parking infrastructure. In South Korea! Speak about missing the forest for the trees

North York at the Center Secondary Plan

A review of the North York Centre Secondary Plan is underway. We have been getting a lot of negative feedback from the community about the significant density expansion proposed in the “Emerging Proposed Option”

1. The proposed new parklands currently include $4 million homes, meaning securing land for park expansion would be unlikely given the cost.

2. Significant investment, including the expropriation of homes, was made to create our treasured ring roads, which protect our neighbourhoods from drive-through traffic, increase pedestrian safety, and reduce potential areas of conflict. This proposal seeks to open up neighbourhood roads to Doris to allow for increased car traffic. Most residents in the areas protected by the ring roads are against this idea.

3. The expansion of density to Willowdale Avenue and Empress Avenue, which are currently served by limited transit service (none on Empress) and some of the areas are just outside of the Primary Major Transit Station Areas. This would unnecessarily exacerbate existing traffic and parking issues.

4. There is no pathway to increasing employment in the community which means an almost doubling of population but very little added employment. Our goal is to be a complete community that offers the full complement of Work-Live-Play.

5. Community organizations would have difficulty to meet the needs of added population with financial and staffing constraints.

Lily Cheng only has negative to say about increased density in Willowdale as part of the North York at the Center Secondary Plan. We are talking of a neighborhood at the intersection of the Yonge and Sheppard subway line, among the best transit in the […]

Toronto’s modular home projects were supposed to be a quick way to ease its housing crisis. So why is Willowdale’s rotting in a warehouse?
