Handwritten poem "At the Country Estate" by Keith O'Shaughnessy: And it was then that, there, in the cherry orchard, by the gooseberry patch, the honeybee bumbled through pied wildflowers, sucking at the comb in the pollen, from the pistil-sprout, because the swell of the nectar was creation, because the prick of the sting was deliverance.And yet, here, now, as the dew frosts the meadow grass, a blackbird circles over the lake's breaking fever, whistling, at the crack of the thaw, for the trickle-melt, because all that is heaven is air, because there is no sound but music. 3/29/26

Seamus
Sept. 5, 2025

The morning you were born,
the rain was scattered with sun.
It was the sort of morning you expect
breath to be seen: the first
hope of a jacket; the first chorus
of yellow leaves shaking on the branches;
the sumac and swamp maple, and the ivy
around a small stump, all going red.

By the afternoon, the rain was hardly
a memory on the asphalt,
so I went to the water
because little blessings deserve prayers,
and the river taught me how to pray.

Seamus Sept. 5, 2025 The morning you were born, the rain was scattered with sun. It was the sort of morning you expect breath to be seen: the first hope of a jacket; the first chorus of yellow leaves shaking on the branches; the sumac and swamp maple, and the ivy around a small stump, all going red. By the afternoon, the rain was hardly a memory on the asphalt, so I went to the water because little blessings deserve prayers, and the river taught me how to pray.

Seven turkey vultures sunbathed in brown grass
before they crowned a cloud. A heron
preened oily feathers on a grey stone
surrounded by smooth water. Spiders
spun the wet sun from their webs.
A stone can carry a wish in the right water:
the way the right rock from the right hands,
here, could go skipping on forever.

The river always remembers a name born in the rain;
the way the water striders keep spelling it out.

Amazing, how a pink knuckle of lady’s thumb
can hold the whole bank back: amazing,
how two little hands and one, big breath
can change the world.

King Tides by Taunja Thomson

Brighter & brighter, moon & pumpkin, season moves, sumptuous orbs like the pupil in the center of our irises widening to catch the scarcer light.

Rub bare branch with fingertips, flick ruby leaves, remember June’s cherries, claret, hard, shiny, how the lemon leaves of now call to mind September’s golden delicious.

October has its own ambrosia, maple flames, burning bushes, bulrushes copper-bending. Wend your way through thinning thicket to grey road. See redtop’s amaranth gleam in sun, bottlebrush skeleton seedhead bob in rain, see how they grow in ditch & puddle, thrive in the muddle between nature & human, ransacked by caterpillar & mouse & fawn-winged sparrow.

Learn to love autumnal darkness like you love night’s receding in March, like king tides giving way to the distant moon.
