Frederick Marryat - The Werewolf "The Werewolf," a short story extracted from Frederick Marryat's novel The Phantom Ship (1839) . Reprinted many times since, often under alternative title of "The White Wolf of the Hartz Mountains," the tale chronicles the misfortunes of Krantz, A Hungarian nobleman's steward, who flees from Transylvania with his three children after murdering his unfaithful wife and lover. Captain Frederick Marryat was a Royal Navy officer and novelist. He is noted today as an early pioneer of nautical fiction, particularly for his semi-autobiographical novel Mr Midshipman Easy (1836). He is remembered also for his children's novel The Children of the New Forest (1847).
