Seven seaters to be eligible for long-distance permits Minister of works and transport Veikko Nekundi on Tuesday announced that seven seater vehicles will now be eligible to get permits to travel long distances. “I confirm that seven seaters will now get permits and travel from Windhoek to Katima Mulilo,” he said. Nekundi also announced that indefinite passenger transport permit holders have until 30 September to revert to a two-year transitional renewable permit, pending the finalisation of amendments to the Road Transportation Act. He said the conversion is to address the manipulation of permits which has disadvantaged vehicle owners who are unable to acquire permits. “[Those] with no vehicles were issued with these licences and they then rent them out at fees ranging from N$500 to N$1 000 a month to the taxi owners, while those with vehicle applications were either turned down or never responded [to] despite several follow ups and appeals,” Nekundi said. As a result, those using rented permits have until 30 September to apply to continue using them until they acquire their own permits to be issued only to vehicle owners.
