The #RootAndBranchPetition was presented to #Cromwell's #LongParliament on #ThisDayInHistory in 1640. It called for abolition of #episcopacy, from fear the hierarchy of the #ChurchOfEngland was a slippery slope back to #Catholicism. When it failed to pass, mobs attacked churches.
