Good Night, BlueSky!
LP cover - all text, no illustration unless you count the O in MELON, which has been drawn as a cut watermelon complete with seeds. Cover is white, title is very large bold all caps in green, the song titles are black and mixed case; the artist is in green. A weird piece all around.
#jazzsky #souljazz #loungesky #musicsky Frank Hunter and the Huntsmen, Watermelon Man, Epic, 1963. Very peculiar album, definitely a jazz album, but with soul-jazz grooves and easy-listening schmooze. Title track has bird calls and weird girl chorus sounds. And organ. Oh, baby.
G’mornin!!!

Something Like That?
Mostly covers of classic lounge songs with a couple original tracks. Still love it.

Album cover - a very soft-focus photo of, I dunno, looks kind of like tall grass, but it also looks like a painting. Too many colors to be grass? Green is dominant, but most stalks have brown, yellow, and blue mixed in. The top quarter is white with Hamp's name in a green mixed-case typeface, and the title below it in light blue italics. At the bottom is a track listing -- all jazz and/or songbook classics.
#jazzsky #vinylsky #loungesky Lionel Hampton, Soft Vibes - Soaring Strings, Columbia, 1961. Hampton is as legit a jazz player as anyone, but he also had a taste for the burgeoning hi-fi easy listening sound. A nice way to start the session. Maybe we'll get funkier later, maybe we won't!
Album cover - pretty terrible, it looks like one of those stock covers used on weird private-press stuff. Full cover photo of a sunset, not a sunrise, I think, over water, with overhanging pine trees, all yellow and orange and gold. An attractive scene, I suppose, but is that enough? The title and artist are in bad fonts in red and purple for the former and very plain blue for the latter.
#jazzsky #vinylsky #loungesky Lionel Hampton, Please Sunrise, Brunswick, 1972. Man, the 70s were rough for a lot of old guys who tried to keep up. Lionel went down a different road than some; this is symphonic easy listening with vibes, strings and brass and a big throbbing bass. Yes, please.
Album cover - on the left, an oval black and white photo of a Black man (Smith) sitting at a kit of Whitehall drums. He's wearing a light-colored double-breasted suit with a white shirt and darker tie. On the right is a similar oval with the artist and title. surrounding these cartouches are stripes of white, purple, green and pink, gathered like show curtains, I guess?
#jazzsky #loungesky #RAndBSky #vinyl You want more? Tony Smith and the Aristocrats, Live at Fred Allegretti's 4 Horsemen Lounge, Sanns, undated but I'd guess 1968-70. More jazz this time, but still an R&B-style lounge act for drinkers with a few pop and rock numbers tossed in.
Album cover - a strange one! In the middle is a photo of a Black man (Smith) sitting at a table with his hands clasped as in prayer. He's wearing a gold turban with a large jewel and a long red feather (Maharajah style?), a black tuxedo coat with large satin lapels. His shirt is peach-colored, and has a ruffled front and cuffs. His bow tie is enormous, and he has at least four huge rings. He has a huge grin on his face. Around the outside in several different fonts are the artist and title.
#jazzsky #r&bsky RockNRollsky #loungesky #wtfsky #vinylsky Tony Smith and the Aristocrats, Maharajah Man, DeTone, 1974. I dunno, man. Tony plays drums; Bill, tenor; Lynn, guitar; Doc, bass and vocals. "Featured at Fred Allegretti's 4 Horsemen Lounge, Algonquin, IL. www.angelfire.com/chicagolandh...
Today might be a shitty day. Seems a safe bet lately.
I recommend listening to some Richard Cheese. "Lounge Against the Machine" is always a good choice.
It helps me, at least.
