Twenty years ago: Lucire Romania launches Yann Dandois It dawned on us that May 2025 marks 20 years since the première issue of _Lucire Romania_ , our first licensed print edition. Mirella Lapusca and Valentin Lapusca, a mother-and-son team in București, had the courage to take on a licence from a magazine that had only been going for eight years at the time, and had a single year in print. The fact that New Zealand was not a nation known for magazine licensors did not deter them—as it turned out, we might have been the only firm doing this in Aotearoa. But we were all brimming with confidence: we at head office felt sure we had a decent product, and Mirella and Valentin felt they could make it work in their market. Coincidentally, Romanian was one language in which the word _Lucire_ existed, though it was not in current speech. They were wonderful to work with and Valentin was an incredible art director and designer. He translated and adapted the _Lucire_ style faithfully—in fact, he did the best job in interpreting my template and style. The first issue had some unique features, e.g. a story on pianist Richard Clayderman, though it had some of our shoots, such as the cover story with Karen Carreño, represented by my friend Paolo Zampolli at ID Models, and photographed by Yann Dandois. It was a decent start for _Lucire Romania_ , and eventually the crew there were confident to branch out with their own cover stories, with Monica Gabor the most memorable Romanian cover model. But, importantly, we recognize that there are great fashion, beauty, lifestyle and travel stories the world over. I have had to think a lot about whether our country-of-origin effect is a positive or a negative. If you look at how the world reacted to the Hon Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke MP, then it’s a positive. But the fact she even needed to speak out against an assault on indigenous rights doesn’t paint us that well. However, Maipi-Clarke’s voice represented the majority, the bill that proposed to undermine Māori rights has been slammed by 90 per cent of Kiwis, so maybe flying the flag in our unique, subtle way is a good thing. I recently discussed with someone the various legal systems, and which should govern a contract. I concluded that New Zealand’s was pretty sound and commonsense when it came to contract law. Our laws themselves are easy to understand, though you still need a law degree to navigate them properly. Overall, there are positive reasons to do business with Aotearoa. _Autocade_ has reached a milestone in terms of model entries. See more here. The next million-page view milestone is coming soon. Daily page views are stable rather than record-breaking. It’s been good to see the original encyclopædia part of _Autocade_ grow more over the last week. Better more original, useful content appearing here than yet another social media post, in my opinion. Social media don’t even get indexed properly these days anyway, so once the posts are read by whatever limited audience most of us have, they’re as good as gone.
