Planting Care Instructions Maintain a 2-3” layer of organic mulch around the tree to improve soil condition and prevent mower/ string trimmer damage. • DO NOT mound mulch or soil up against the stem of the tree! Other Information: • Trees planted by MCDOT will be inspected at the end of the first growing season to determine their health. Any tree found to be in “Poor” condition will be replaced under warranty. • Planting stakes will be removed after the end of the first growing season. PROPER MULCHING Use a garden hose or bucket to water newly planted trees with 10 - 20 gallons of water each week, throughout the first growing season (April - October). • A watering can be skipped whenever we receive significant rainfall. A second watering each week may be beneficial in periods of extreme heat and drought. • Less frequent but “deeper” watering is helpful in alleviating any extreme periods of drought during the tree’s second growing season.
