Infographic explaining BepiColombo’s fifth flyby of Mercury. In the centre of the infographic we see the spacecraft flying past the planet. On the left we see the inner Solar System in perspective, with the positions of Mercury, Venus and Earth indicated. On the right we see which of BepiColombo’s instruments will be activated during the flyby.
In a few hours #BepiColombo will do its 5th gravity assist (or flyby) around Mercury. This is the first time #MERTIS is going to observe the planet, and its the first time there will be a mid-infrared light observation of the surface of Mercury! 🤩 #BepiColombo (Infographics by #ESA)
In the Planetary Spectroscopy Laboratory (PSL), @DLR_de can simulate the conditions of the planet’s surface. Rocks 🪨 are examined at 450°C 🌡️ in a vacuum. The results will be used by @BepiColombo & #MERTIS teams following the 3rd #MercuryFlyby in 2023:...
Two @DLR_de instruments are also on board. 🔍The #MERTIS infrared imaging spectrometer & radiometer will study #Mercury’s surface and interior once in orbit. The BELA laser altimeter provides ℹ️ about the global shape, rotation & topography of the planet:...
