Trump’s renewed Arctic strategy places Greenland at the center of U.S. geopolitical interests, alongside Canada, due to the region's vast untapped resources. Melting ice caps are revealing rich deposits of oil, gas, rare-earth metals, and uranium—making Greenland a focal point for international competition. However, local opposition to large-scale extraction, particularly uranium mining, is growing amid environmental and sovereignty concerns.
Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, managing most domestic affairs since 2009, while Denmark retains control over foreign policy and defense. In 2019, Trump sparked controversy by proposing to buy Greenland—a move dismissed as "absurd" by both Denmark and Greenland. Despite the backlash, Trump continues to emphasize Greenland’s strategic importance for U.S. national security and Arctic dominance, reiterating his interest in acquiring the island.
Greenland’s 2025 election brought the pro-independence Demokraatit party to power, signaling resistance to both Danish control and U.S. influence. With no majority, it must form a coalition. The result pushes back against Trump’s renewed acquisition efforts, despite the existing U.S. presence at Pituffik Space Base.
