Good question: nobody on this panel seems to believe in echo chambers and filter bubbles, so why do we keep talking about them ? I think it’s because it’s easier to find the few extreme cases where they do exist than document the many others where they don’t. #mine2018

Marco @toledobastos is very kind, but I really don’t think I was the first to critique the whole echo chamber / filter bubble idea. :-) #mine2018

While we’re still on the discussion panel, RAI TV is already doing interviews outside. #mine2018

Hyperpartisans may be very well aware of opposing views and content (= no filter bubble) - but they’re so set in their beliefs that they can’t be convinced by those alternative viewpoints any more, even if they argue with those others (= no echo chamber). #mine2018

Some interesting discussion of echo chambers / filter bubbles on this panel - but let’s not confuse this with hyperpartisanship. If M5S supporters are commenting en masse on anti-M5S Stories, for instance, then by definition they’re not in a filter bubble... #mine2018

Is this organic ? Is it coordinated ? Is it done by bots ? We can’t tell, and - given the increasing data access issues around the #FacebookAPI - we may now never be able to, @fabiogiglietto says. #mine2018

But the Five Star Movement (M5S) is the real story here. Facebook engagement patterns around its sites are strongly distinct from those for other parties - there’s a concerted effort to _share_ pro-M5S content and _comment_ on anti-M5S content. #mine2018

The way Italian political TV consumption is transforming (less direct watching, more consumption of highlights via clickbait video platforms) is also fascinating, and might explain why Berlusconi’s game is failing. #mine2018

One of the interesting innovations in this study is the Multi-Party Media Partisanship Attention Score (MP-MPAS), which @fabiogiglietto and colleagues adapted from a simpler US model to suit Italy’s more complex political landscape. #mine2018
