MP’s wants renewal of agriculture sector
Various members of parliament have called for the renewal of the agriculture sector, saying that a nation that cannot feed itself will remain vulnerable.
In her maiden speech on Wednesday, Swapo member of parliament Martha Itope said the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform should come up with ways to start production to enhance food security and job creation in the country.
“A nation that cannot feed itself will forever remain vulnerable; henceforth, I call upon all relevant ministries, agencies and stakeholders involved to go on the ground to familiarise themselves with the actual situation and renew the agricultural sector,” she said.
Itope said the voters expect more from them, and their performance should instill confidence, hope, and trust.
All People’s Party president Ambrious Kumbwa said comparative studies indicate that the effectiveness and commitment of office bearers are often assessed within the first 100 days of their tenure.
He called for a thorough review of food import and export policies, as well as other essential commodities that impact livelihoods, both directly and indirectly, with the aim of making necessary revisions for national benefit.
“Competency, productivity and public service delivery within this period will determine the direction of this parliament,” he said.
Kumbwa argued that having qualifications, being young, or being outspoken is not enough.
He said implementation must go beyond theoretical discussions on paper, further adding that theory must be converted into practice at all costs and under all circumstances.
