We see a fresco of St George slaying the dragon. He is identified in Greek letters at the top. This is in the Greek Orthodox Church of St George in Madaba, Jordan. In the late 19th Century, Greek Orthodox citizens petitioned the Turkish authorities to resettle the biblical city of Madaba. Their petition was granted. The city is located in what's today known as Jordan. Restoration recovered buildings, mosaics, and other art from the Roman and Byzantine eras. The most famous discovery is the Sixth Century AD floor mosaic map of the Holy Land. This fresco is not ancient, but from the 19th Century restoration. Church records do not record the artist's name.

Such a nice city. The mosaics are beautiful and the city has a good vibe. Mosques and churches side by side like it should be.
I like Amman but I recommend staying a couple of days in Madaba before you leave Jordan. It’s also closer to Queen Alia Intl Airport than Amman is.

The Madaba Mosaic Map is the oldest known geographic flood map, featuring the oldest surviving depiction of the Holy Land and Jerusalem. It was constructed around 1,500 years ago in Madaba, Jordan.

LAMB TIED TO A TREE, 575-576 CE. ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF MADABA, JORDAN This mosaic in stone tesserae comes from the complex of the cathedral of Madaba, on the southern slope of the town's acropolis. The cathedral's origins date from a century previous, but continual restructuring, suggesting a growing and thriving Christian community here, made bishop Sergius build a new baptistery over the preceding narrower one, which he decorated with mosaics. This panel comes from the full-immersion font itself, of cruciform shape. It shows a lamb, outlined in black but mainly yellow with brown and white shadings, tied with a red ribbon to a tree behind it, whose leaves, dark green on the tops and grey on the underside, suggest it is an olive tree. This panel decorated one of the "arms" of the cross-shaped font, with a symmetrical one in the other "arm". The white background makes the tree and lamb stand out - the lamb represents both Christ and the soul being reborn in baptism, and the olive tree represents peace.

This is the oldest mosaic map known to history, or at least the original is, which is still in situ. This copy is currently (February 2025) in an exhibition about early Christian sites in Jordan at the Cancelleria in Rome. What we see here is only a detail of a very lacunar map that once measured 21 x 7 metres and showed an area from Lebanon in the north to the Nile Delta in the south, and from the Mediterranean Sea in the west to the Eastern Desert. The detail shows Jerusalem ("Hagia polis Ierousa[lem]", holy city of Jerusalem, labelled in red Greek letters on a white field above the city). The mosaic shows a number of significant structures: the Damascus Gate, the Lions' Gate, the Golden Gate, the Zion Gate, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the New Church of the Theotokos, the Tower of David, and the Cardo Maximus. The Madaba Map, as it is called, is an invaluable source for Biblical archaeology.
