These evergreen trees just do their own thing!
Their wood is so hard, I've seen cats slide down their trunks, claws unable to grab hold. Love these trees. Their range is mostly along the U.S. Pacific coast, west of the Cascades.

The contorted trunk of this madrone made a perfect place to sit and become one with this beautiful tree. The faky bark has peeled off most of the trunk, leaving an unbelievably smooth surface to cuddle with.

This is a Pacific madrone tree, native to the Pacific Northwest. Each summer its thin red-brown bark peels off; underneath, the smooth bark is a pale green that eventually deepens back to red-brown.
