Small Japanese maple in a starter pot, in a mix of native scoria (vesicular lava) pumice and Jory Series Clay from the Willamette Valley. Photo is a tree in a clay pot with other “bonsai in training” in the background.
Potted up this very proto-bonsai for a friend. Perfect starter tree…really only requires morning sun/afternoon shade, water, fertilizer once a year and a bit of trimming from time to time. Bones are there…could be a good little tree in 5 more years.

Lower one looks “natural” for a cut and not really natural for actual nature…upper one looks like a natural break, but is not very attractive. Uppermost limb (background) will be stripped downward to resemble a broad ken branch.
Feature or flaw?
Once a throw away tree, decided to pot, chop a few major limbs and see what develops.
Spruce are quite brittle once limbs >1/4”, so setting some limbs will need to take place soon.
Moving crown to accentuate or hide the two previous cuts?
Thoughts??

A Hinoki Cypress in a clay development pot on a patio table. The tree has a split trunk (Hinoki often do this) and the right trunk has been sheared off…representing the stress of the wilds. Although the bulk of the shearing was intentional, some was caused by the 2024 winter snow storm and fir tree attack.

A bendy Pinus Contorta in a free from #Bonsai pot from a local potter. This tree was a stowaway in a field collected hemlock I purchased at a local garden shop years ago. A nice bonus!

A bunch of swarthy pines and hemlocks and other stuff in the “hot zone” of the garage…newly rebuilt after last year’s devastating storm cleaved it with a falling fir.
This is the location where all my bonsai were to shelter from the icy winds!

This azalea has presented challenges since day one, with the large, low and almost horizontal major limb.
A friendly critter decides to come out of the woodworks to say hello.
Thinning of foliage and branch removal nearly complete. Like the silhouette more than the fully presented tree.
Final form for this year with a few large branch removal choices, further refinement of which are going to be allowed to continue to grow. Hinoki Cypress in a dark brown clay development pot on a patio table with tools and leaves upon it. Background is yard shrubs, bonsai and a wooden fence.
Another deciduous azalea getting a late summer thinning/shaping and back on track for fall.
Some major and minor limbs removed to open up the silhouette of trunk(s) and limbs.
Azaleas offer a most pleasant amount of work/payoff after work is done.

Moss removal, some minor cleanup of branches/foliage and right side pulled down with raffia. This one was little effort and repotting/final shaping to come next winter/spring.

Overgrown, underfed and weedy…time for some cleaning and decisioneering. A deciduous azalea on a patio table silhouetted against the yard and brighter fence/sky.
Central cleaning completed. Left and right sides of newly chosen front yet to be cleaned.
Cleaning done (though right side looks budge due to camellia behind it)…good to go for this tail end of the summer.
First relaxing morning in the newly inhabitable Bonsaitoranaseum.
A bit of attention to the brood…starting with maples and azaleas.
Mostly moving so more cleaning and paver work can be done…but while moving, can’t resist a couple hours of trimming and watering.
