I repotted my Douglas Fir #penjing yesterday. I've been needing a new pot for a while now as the old one had developed a crack and found a beautiful one at the nursery. I love the look of the new platter! #bonsai

A wall with a large circular opening separates two parts of this outdoor garden, lit by natural sunlight from an open roof. Outside, the opening is decorated by a tree to the left that is just starting to show red flowers; below it one can just make out a white-blooming hellebore. Beyond, one can see a serpentine path going past some plantings that include a graceful pine tree.
This most elegant of #Openings is in the outside gardens of the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum of the US National Arboretum, Washington, DC [USA].

The dog decided that the Alaska fish emulsion fertilizer seemed like it would be delicious.
One of the GBBP #bonsai sustained an injury. 😭
Note the wound near the bottom. It was a few days ago, but when watering today the splash bent it some. So it earned a splint.

Oh shit! That worked really well, I got a pretty good bend into the lower trunk. It was my first time working with rebar and raffia (the stuff wrapped abound the trunk) and it turned out pretty clean. I’ll probably have to let it sit like this until next spring for it to set in place. #bonsai

Took a first crack at this Duffer with Scott Elser. Coincidentally, the plan is very similar to the itoigawa I shared recently - everything to the left, along with the lowest branch on the right, will be coming off, leaving the canopy on the upper right.

Planned approach graft that will bring foliage much closer to the trunk so I can cut off longer branches.
But of a bust, I needed to do grafting, but I didn't have grafting tape or nails, so we talked about it and I'm going to do it later. But the tree came out looking the same.
But I have a plan, and we confirmed what a good front was.

#NativePlant pre #Bonsai with a multitrack red mulberry I collected two years ago. It got a big root prune today, removed 70% of the roots. It will need more tap root work when it transitions into bonsai. Back into nursery mix for another two seasons.
