π Malayan banded pitta (Hydrornis irena) β The Malayan banded pitta is a small, vibrant bird with a black and yellow head with an orange nape, a brown back and wings, a blue and orange banded chest, and a short, blue tail. Females have a more uniformly brown and orange banded chest. Found in lowland and hill forests of Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Sumatra, and Thailand, it prefers dense undergrowth. These shy, solitary birds forage on the forest floor for insects and invertebrates, and are more often heard than seen, thanks to their melodious, flute-like calls.
