🌏 Indian Pitta (Pitta brachyura)

The Indian Pitta is a brightly-coloured, plump, short-tailed bird with vibrant plumage including green, blue, buff, and red.  It's native to the Indian subcontinent, breeding in central and northern India and the Himalayan foothills before migrating south for the winter. The Malayan banded pitta is a small, vibrant bird with a black and yellow head with an orange nape, a brown back and wings, a blue and orange banded chest, and a short, blue tail. Females have a more uniformly brown and orange banded chest. Found in lowland and hill forests of Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Sumatra, and Thailand, it prefers dense undergrowth. These shy, solitary birds forage on the forest floor for insects and invertebrates, and are more often heard than seen, thanks to their melodious, flute-like calls.
