π Western hooded pitta (Pitta sordida) The western hooded pitta is a strikingly coloured bird, 16-19 cm long, with a black head, chestnut crown, and green body and wings. Its distribution spans eastern and southeastern Asia, including parts of India, China, and maritime Southeast Asia, inhabiting various forests, plantations, and cultivated areas. This ground-dwelling species forages for insects, larvae, and berries. They are highly territorial, especially during their February-August breeding season, building nests on the ground and emitting distinctive "qweeek-qweeek" whistle calls. 2.5 Flash (Edited) Six subspecies are recognised.
