A large proportion of Malaysian modern art was contributed by the ethnic Chinese artists' group in Penang, called the Penang Chinese Art Club, established in 1936. Yong Mun Sen (楊曼生) was a core member and led the group, quickly adopting the subjects and expression of European modern artists such as post-impressionist French artist Paul Gauguin. Mun Sen created a world of painting that depicted people and customs in the manner of the "south seas." Highly valued for his pioneering work, he is held in esteem as the "father of Malaysian modern art." This 1931 painting shows the artist, in his mid-thirties, searching for an independent style and subject matter while developing as a "south seas" Chinese artist. It portrays a seated woman with dark complexion on a sandy beach, against a backdrop of a serene sky with clouds. The scene is composed with the woman centered, seated on a large, brown log. She is relaxed, and her gaze is directed slightly to her right. The color palette is muted, using a variety of browns and tans, with hints of orange. The woman appears to be of middle age and is seated with her knees bent and her hands resting on her lap. Her attire is a light-tan, reddish-brown long wrap. Her body is rendered with substantial volume. There is some subtle shading, creating an impression of three-dimensionality, but the forms are broadly defined rather than detailed. In the setting of the scene and the color of the woman's skin, this work brings to mind Gauguin's work showing Tahitian women in natural settings. The simplification of the body and scenery reveals the influence of Cubism. On the other hand, regarding the two trees at the water's edge, the influence of Chinese traditional painting can be seen in the basic composition and form. Mun Sen's style is representational yet simplified, using thick brushstrokes that creates a visible texture. The atmosphere of the scene suggests a calm and peaceful moment on a beach for this lady of dignity.
