Three bull elephants neared a community, alarming herders and livestock. The Mara Elephant Project’s Foxtrot team deployed fast, using a drone to guide the bulls back to safety. Quick community response keeps both people and wildlife safe. #MaraElephants
The MEP helicopter played a key role in helping Kenya Wildlife Service Vet Dr. Ashif Hafiz dart and treat an injured elephant in Naboisho Conservancy. It enabled safe separation from the herd, leading to a successful arrow removal and ongoing recovery. #MaraElephants
Individual #2, nicknamed ‘Flopsy Lopsy,’ a 45-year-old tailless elephant bull with a floppy ear, visited MEP HQ this week. First recorded in 2021, he’s been monitored 28 times by our LTM team. Flopsy is often seen with collared elephant Fred and the late Kegol in a bachelor herd. #MaraElephants
While on a night drone patrol, MEP’s newly created 'Delta" ranger team witnessed a herd cross a swollen Mara River with a calf. The elephants were briefly swept downstream but all made it safely to the riverbank. A relief, after that brief tense moment. #MaraElephants #MEPRangers
It’s #FridayswithFred! Can you spot him? Fred, who is in his late 40s, weighs about 6 tons (12,000 lbs.), identified by his long tusks, two U-shaped tears, and holes on his right ear, a small hole on his lower left ear, and a wart on the right side of his trunk. #MaraElephants
Meet MEP’s 10th ranger team; the 'Delta' team. Formed to boost rapid response to human-elephant conflict in the Transmara area, they’ve already mitigated 20 incidents and are building strong community ties to protect both people and elephants. #MaraElephants
Having eyes in the sky allows Mara Elephant Project rangers to get a high-level view of an operational area and more effectively coordinate their efforts. A recent operation demonstrates how important that can be. #MaraElephants

A rise in wildlife injuries in three Mara regions prompted a joint three-day patrol by MEP, KWS, and local conservancy rangers to address bushmeat snares and illegal habitat destruction. In Q1 2024 alone, MEP removed over twice the snares compared to 2023. #MaraElephants
Some exciting 2025 updates from the recipients of the Fran Duthie African Elephant Conservation Scholarship. Mark, Leshan, Mary, and Sumaiya continue gaining new skills, networking, and looking forward to course completion. We wish them well in their studies.

MEP's "Lima" ranger team in Mosiro often witness mega herds of elephants. While impressive, these herds are challenging to manage, particularly near settlements. They deploy drones to protect both the elephants and community coexisting in this complex area. #MaraElephants
In yet another thrilling encounter, MEP rangers had to navigate a combination of risks when they were called to respond to three elephants that had wandered into a home filled with livestock and people. #MaraElephants
