Non-Chronic Illness (0-10):
0 - No Pain: No pain.
1 - Minimal: Hardly noticeable pain.
2 - Mild: Low-level pain, noticeable when paying attention.
3 - Uncomfortable: Bothersome pain, can be ignored sometimes.
4 - Moderate: Constant awareness of pain, but able to continue most activities.
5 - Distracting: Pain is noticeable, limits some activities.
6 - Distressing: Frequent thoughts about pain, giving up many activities.
7 - Unmanageable: Constant pain, limits most activities.
8 - Intense: Severe pain, hard to think of anything else.
9 - Severe: Overwhelming pain, can barely talk or move.
10 - Unable to Move: Incapacitating pain, requires emergency help.

Chronic Illness (-3-13):
-3: Unheard of, either knocked out or magically swapped bodies.
-2: Treatable with magical yoga, turmeric, positive thinking.
-1: Mild pain, a dream come true for chronic pain sufferers.
0: Lowest level of pain, a rarity.
1: Normal "good day," pain won't get lower.
2: Limited activities, pushing through pain.
3: Annoyed, waiting for meds to kick in.
4: Normal, but hated.
5: Limited activities, using distractions.
6: Flare territory, resting and ranting.
7: Using all knowledge and meds, can't move.
8: Admitting pain, possibly looking ill.
9: Desperate for help, high stress.
10: Scared, wanting to escape the pain.
11: Ok. It hurts now. We'll admit it to others at this point. This is possibly when we actually "look ill". But you won't see us, so you'll never know.
12: Nothing we have been prescribed to help with this level actually helps. We'll actually seek help in desperation now. Stress & blood pressure through the roof.
13: non chronic illness people around us are scared. We're scared. We may pass out from pain. We don't want to be here for this. It's something we have to live with, usually forever. This is the bad place.

I don't know who developed this (if you do, please tell me) but it's too true. To add insult to onjury, chronic pain sufferers get so good at masking pain, others often don't believe how much pain they're in.
