The front cover of a book entitled "Devon's Home Front Diaries"
I was so excited to receive this book last week - it's about life on the home front in Devon in #WW2, & features diaries from someone in my #OneNameStudy! The book is by Todd Gray, who used diaries from the #MassObservation Archive to bring this interesting period of history to life #GenHour
Excellent day at the Mass Observation Archive. Great discussions about methods for big data and what's occurring atm. LOVED visiting the archive. This is a #BucketList moment I never knew I had. Excellent.

It’s the #MassObservation #DiaryDay! However interesting or uninteresting your day is, please consider recording it for posterity for @massobsarchive.bsky.social. They are creating an invaluable resource- a record of the thoughts & experiences of ordinary people.
And now here's my 12 May 2022 #MassObservation diary, which I had to force myself to write because it had become a kind of annual personal reflection point and I was unhappy about my story at that point. I didn't actually post it until late 2022 and haven't done May 12 since then but will tomorrow.
I see it's now 11 May 2025, so a 2x helping of 12 May diaries. Here's my 12 May 2021 #MassObservation diary, written in the still ongoing COVID pandemic, at a point where I'd had enough like everyone else. Otherwise on brand: false personal optimism and total cynicism about politics. #Sociology
You may have heard of the UK Mass Observation Project - an anonymous record of daily life.
If you want to take part by submitting an online diary on Monday next week - 12th May - you'll be welcomed by the University of Sussx research team.
Instructions are here (don't forget the copyright […]
Are you going to submit a day diary to the Mass Observation Archive for 12 May 2025?
Here's my day diary for 12 May 2010, back when I was still living in Brighton. (NB you don't have to be an academic working on MO to do this!). 4 days to go. #MassObservation #Sociology #AcademicSky
6 days to go to 12 May. Here's the 5th and final post ‘In the future MO, everyone will be both “native” and “ethnographer” and in possession of a poetic kind of thinking powerful enough to change reality in order to meet their collective mass social needs’ #MassObservation #Sociology #Anthropology
7 days to go to 12 May. Here's the fourth post in this series on May the Twelfth. This covers internal changes to MO following the publication of May the Twelfth and the relationship they developed with the anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski. #MassObservation #Sociology #Anthropology
8 days to go to 12 May 2025. Here's the third post in this series on May the Twelfth. This concerns MO’s account of the coronation procession in London on 12 May 1937 and the representation strategies they employed to avoid becoming part of the media hype. #MassObservation #Sociology
9 days to go to 12 May 2025. Here's the second post in this series on May the Twelfth #MassObservation #Sociology
As we approach 12 May 2025 it seems appropriate to share these blog posts from a couple of years ago on the first #MassObservation book, May the Twelfth. We're living through a similarly epochal decade. And, of course, the monarchy is trending today yet again. #Sociology
Happy New Year from the MO team!
How did you spend your New Year? Did it bear any similarity to G2881's (16, student) new year? Lunch with old relatives? Meeting a new bloke? Dressed up all retro?
