Operational sex ratio (Ecology 🏞️)
In the evolutionary biology of sexual reproduction, operational sex ratio is the ratio of sexually competing males that are ready to mate to sexually competing females that are ready to mate, or alternatively the local ratio of fertilizable females to sexually […]
Morphological characteristics of plants for Halenia elliptica (a) and H. grandiflora (b) and topographic distribution of experimental sites (c). YS means the Yulong Snow Mountain population (3667 m a.s.l); RS means the Research Station population (3223 m a.s.l); BG means the Botanic Garden population (2660 m a.s.l.).
Ming-Liu Yang et al. explored whether the degree of pollen limitation primarily drives differences in #MatingSystems and #FloralTraits of #Halenia species.

⭐Issue 6 of JEB is now online!⭐
This issue is headlined by a Target Review from @josselin-clo.bsky.social et al. on #matingsystems evolution, accompanied by several #invitedcommentaries expanding on this key discussion comparing concepts in plants and animals:

To explore whether the degree of #PollenLimitation (PL) primarily drives differences in #MatingSystems and #FloralTraits, Ming-Liu Yang et al. investigated floral traits, PL, #ReproductiveAssurance, mating system et al. of #HaleniaElliptica and #HaleniaGrandiflora.

The second male flower deposited more pollen on stigmas, even when controlling for time effects. This suggests smothering or displacement of the first male’s pollen, much like last-male sperm precedence in animals. #SexualSelection #MatingSystems
