This is the Matsumoto Castle (松本城), located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Also known as the “Crow Castle” (Karasu-jō) due to its striking black exterior, it is one of Japan’s most complete and original feudal castles. Matsumoto Castle is a flatland castle (hirajiro), built on a plain rather than a hill or mountain. Its elegant wooden donjon (main keep) features multiple roofs and watchtowers, surrounded by a moat and red bridges that enhance its beauty—especially in winter or during cherry blossom season. The contrast of black-and-white walls with the vivid red bridge and reflective moat makes it one of Japan’s most photogenic historic sites. The castle’s origins trace back to 1504, during the Sengoku (Warring States) Period, when the Ogasawara clan constructed the original fortification, Fukashi Castle. In the late 16th century, Ishikawa Kazumasa and his son Yasunaga, vassals of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, expanded it into the impressive structure seen today. Following the Battle of Sekigahara (1600), Matsumoto Castle came under Tokugawa rule and was governed by several daimyō families throughout the Edo period. After the Meiji Restoration (1868), it was nearly dismantled but was saved thanks to local citizens’ efforts led by Ichikawa Ryozo. Today, Matsumoto Castle is a National Treasure of Japan and one of only twelve castles in the country that still retain their original main keep. It stands as a symbol of Japan’s samurai heritage, architectural ingenuity, and the enduring pride of the Matsumoto community.
