A 2015 photo of Maurice Starr (in a wheelchair now since suffering from a severe stroke) reunited amicably with his former proteges New Kids on the Block.
In 2015, Maurice suffered a stroke (also like Col Tom) and only makes limited public appearances now, but he has reconciled with at least one of his former protégés—NKOTB. #MauriceStarr #NKOTB 14/18
TBMP infographic ft. side-by-side photos of Colonel Tom Parker and Maurice Starr. The accompanying text: Maurice observed Colonel Tom Parker closely (he even started calling himself “the General”) and flipped the script by using the #ElvisEffect to his advantage by creating a watered-down version of his original Black creation. However, he may have studied Colonel Tom too closely because both NKOTB and New Edition accused him of taking financial advantage of them.

#SeoTaiji took New Jack's music, sound, & choreography & the style of boy bands produced by #MauriceStarr & fused it with South Korean culture to launch #KPop with his band Seo Taiji & Boys. K-Pop has evolved, but at its core, it still leans heavily on African-American conventions. 10/18
An excerpt from a feature on Maurice Starr highlighting his New York Times interview quote.
Maurice was well aware of the #ElvisEffect & knew that a white approximation of African-American style & aesthetic would mean more mainstream opportunities. "If #NewEdition was as big as they were, I could imagine what would happen if white kids were doing the same thing." — #MauriceStarr 6/17
