Mount Saint Helens erupts on May 18th, 1980. The water skier on Yale Lake is Jim Hobson, then 19. From nearby Battle Ground, WA. The scene certainly looks harrowing with the mountain erupting in the background. However, the ash & debris blew east of the reservoir. Hobson & friends were safely out of the blast zone.
