The mosaic mask featuring fangs, attributed to the Maya civilization and dating between 1200 and 1520 AD, exemplifies the intricate artistry and spiritual depth of Mesoamerican cultures. Such masks were not merely decorative; they embodied profound religious and cosmological significance. Crafted meticulously, these masks often utilized materials like turquoise, lignite, and various shells, each chosen for its symbolic meaning and aesthetic appeal. The incorporation of fangs into the design likely represented powerful deities or supernatural beings, emphasizing themes of strength and protection. These elements suggest the masks played a role in rituals or ceremonies, possibly serving as conduits between the physical and spiritual realms. The use of precious materials and the complexity of the designs indicate that such masks were significant cultural artifacts, reflecting the Maya's sophisticated understanding of art and symbolism. They offer valuable insights into the civilization's beliefs, societal structures, and interactions with the divine.

A rare vintage 1950s handmade sterling silver ornately framed and dangling pre Columbian inspired Mayan Mask design brooch by Los Castillo of Taxco. A lovely design that likely originated in the 1940s, and I'm guessing a Margot design, though this example was made a bit later in the 1950s. No doubt based upon or influenced by the ancient arts of Mexico, most likely the Maya. Measures 2.25" wide by 1.5" tall, and weighs 17.2 grams total. Marked at back as shown with the 1950s circular marks, "Los Castillo Taxco" and "Sterling Made in Mexico", along with the Eagle 15 and design number "224". Excellent vintage condition.

Mayan stucco mask of a deity. The Ancient Maya created three main types of masks: celebration masks, battle masks, and death masks, each with distinct purposes and features. Celebration masks were worn during important events like weddings and birth ceremonies. They often depicted heavenly beings, animals, or other designs for entertainment purposes. These masks were vibrant and colorful, often painted on wooden surfaces. Battle masks were worn during warfare, battle masks were designed to intimidate enemies and to provide protection to the wearer. They often depicted fierce animals like jaguars or snakes, symbolizing the power and strength of the gods or spirits. Death masks were used to adorn the faces of the dead, often seen as the most sacred and intricate. They were often adorned with jade mosaics, reflecting the Mayan belief in a sacred connection between the people and their gods.
