CNN’s Brownstein Deflects Swalwell Scandal, Suggests GOP Support Abuse Amid the fallout from sexual abuse allegations against now disgraced Democrat California Rep. Eric Swalwell, CNN This Morning’s conversation on the subject Monday morning turned into an exercise in whataboutism from CNN analyst and Bloomberg Opinion columnist Ron Brownstein. Brownstein took the conversation off its track with accusations that Republicans and their “coalitions” had a different view on sexual abuse. After Cornish asked why House Democrat leader Hakeem Jeffries spoke “strongly,” without support of a Swalwell expulsion, Brownstein turned away from Swalwell and turned the conversation to a comparison of Republicans to Democrats, with praise for Dems: Uh, well, you know, there's a fundamental difference between the parties in the way they have handled. I mean, I just (...) I just look at the speed at which Swalwell unraveled and was forced out of the race with pressure from fellow Democrats. And, you know, there was nothing like that on the Republican side. And that does not only reflect kind of views of elites. I mean, if you drill down into the way voters in each coalition view allegations of sexual abuse, it is quite different. And so - As Cornish jumped in to steer the conversation back to Swalwell, which was the whole point of the segment, not Trump or “voters in each coalition view of sexual abuse” being different, Brownstein couldn't help with interjections: (Click “expand”) CORNISH: But can I stop here? The CNN reporting here - And I'm just going to the CNN reporting here. And he has denied this. BROWNSTEIN: But - CORNISH: - from CNN, their report was that a former Swalwell staffer claimed that he raped her. BROWNSTEIN: And its - and its, and - what happened is what should have happened. I'm just saying it is striking the contrast between what didn't happen. I mean, the fact that Democrats- As Brownstein tried to avoid mention of Swalwell once again, Fischer had to mention more on Swalwell and the grown man’s use of Snapchat to converse with a congressional intern, with mention of Trump to appease Brownstein. Brownstein’s statements were so off the point where even host Audie Cornish had to remind him Republicans were poised to expel Congressman Tony Gonzales (R-TX) after the sexual affair scandal that helped lead to a loss in his primary. Cornish had to push back on Brownstein with mention of grown Republican support to expel Representative Tony Gonzales (R-TX) as a point against Brownstein’s allegations of Republican support of sexual abuse, as Brownstein was still stuck on the Republican “coalition”: BROWNSTEIN: I'm just saying that, you know, we are being reminded that we are operating in kind of very different political worlds - CORNISH: Let me add another thought then - BROWNSTEIN: - that reflects not only the elected officials, but again, the electorates. The coalitions themselves.” CORNISH: Republican Tony Gonzales of Texas, okay, also facing an expulsion vote. He's been accused of inappropriate sexual behavior with a staffer. I'm bringing this up just to counter your point that you may have a Congress looking at expelling two members. Brownstein’s attempt not to talk about Swalwell took the conversation off track and did not give the Swalwell conversation its needed focus. The hijacking of the segment only reflected poorly on Brownstein in his attempt to minimize Swalwell’s actions, something that, apparently, had been an open secret on Capitol Hill and California politics. Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell is dropping out of the California Governor's race as he continues to deny sexual assault allegations. In a post on X, the Democrat apologized for his, quote, “mistakes in judgment.” And it was fellow Democrats who forced his hand. (...) 6:16:50 AM Eastern CORNISH: All right, so the group chat is back. I wanted to talk about this because this statement came from Hakeem Jeffries. He said, “following the incredibly disturbing sexual assault accusations against Congressman Swalwell, We call for a swift investigation into the incident,” and said that this is “unacceptable of anyone, certainly not an elected official, and must be taken seriously.” Ron, why do you think that Jeffries spoke so strongly in this case, where we have seen Congress be very reluctant to expel lawmakers with their tiny minority and majority lines? RON BROWNSTEIN: Well, you know, there's a fundamental difference between the parties in the way they have handled. I mean, I just - CORNISH: Handled sexual assault issues. And I think part of this, and why he swiftly stepped down, is because there might be a digital trail of some of the stuff that Donald Trump never had. And I think that makes it much harder for him to just say, oh, this never happened. I do think there's probably a digital footprint, and he is aware of that. And that is where there’s a - BROWNSTEIN: I think there’s a lot of evidence of what Donald Trump did as well FISCHER: 100 percent. BROWNSTEIN: You know, but the point is - CORNISH: I think I hear her saying that Swalwell is also trying to get ahead of what could turn out to be explicit messages or photos. And you've had multiple women - BROWNSTEIN: It was instantly untenable for him to remain in the race. And based on these accusations, it should have been untenable for him to remain in the race. I'm just saying that, you know, we are being reminded that we are operating in kind of very different political worlds - CORNISH: Let me add another thought then - BROWNSTEIN: - that reflects not only the elected officials, but again, the electorates. OMISSION: Amid Swalwell Swirl, Nets Still Avoid Cherfilus’ Chicanery The Elitist Media network newscasts had to scramble as late news broke of the decision made by cable news fixture and serial flatulator Congressman Eric Swalwell (D-CA) to resign from Congress after suspending his gubernatorial campaign due to sexual assault allegations. And under cover of the Swalwell story, the networks continue to run a major omission. Per NBC News: Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., announced his plans Monday to resign from Congress following calls from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle for him to step down amid sexual assault and misconduct allegations. “I am aware of efforts to bring an immediate expulsion vote against me and other members. Expelling anyone in Congress without due process, within days of an allegation being made, is wrong. But it’s also wrong for my constituents to have me distracted from my duties. Therefore, I plan to resign my seat in Congress,” Swalwell wrote on X. He didn't specify when exactly he intends to step down, saying instead that he would work with his staff to ensure it can “serve the needs of the good people of the 14th congressional district.” In his statement, Swalwell apologized to his family, staff members and constituents for “mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past.” However, he maintained that at least some of the allegations were false. The newscasts each ran with Swalwell at or near the top of A-block, covering the allegations, his resignation and the coming retirement of U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX), who faces similar accusations of sexual improprieties. And yet the networks continue to refuse to cover the charges faced by U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL). Per her indictment: The indictment alleges that the defendants conspired to steal that $5 million and routed it through multiple accounts to disguise its source. Prosecutors allege that a substantial portion of the misappropriated funds was used as candidate contributions to Cherfilus-McCormick’s 2021 congressional campaign and for the personal benefit of the defendants. The indictment further alleges that Cherfilus-McCormick and Nadege Leblanc, 46, of Miramar, arranged additional contributions using straw donors, funneling other monies from the FEMA-funded Covid-19 contract to friends and relatives who then donated to the campaign as if using their own money. This scandal has been festering since last November, and the recent House Ethics trial found Cherfilus-McCormick guilty of 25out of 27 charges. But coverage of this particular scandal has been nil. These disparities in coverage do nothing but fuel speculation that the reason Swalwell is drawing the level of scrutiny is because of the California gubernatorial primary- with aid and comfort from the Elitist Media. NewsBusters Podcast: It's An 'Honor' for NBC to Interview a Commie? When Americans interview foreign tyrants, you have to question how they paint themselves as champions of democracy. They’re often so pleased to be granted access that this leads to compliant questioning. That happened on Meet the Press with Cuban “President” Miguel Diaz-Canel. "It's an honor," Kristen Welker oozed. She didn't say that at the end of the last Trump interview. Diaz-Canel is not a “president,” which implies he is somehow elected. He’s not. He was selected by the Communist Party to play the Head of State. NewsBusters associate editor Nick Fondacaro and news analyst and radio host Jorge Bonilla joined the show to consider all the bias over the weekend. The toughest question was “Would you be willing to step down if it meant saving Cuba?” Diaz-Canel was offended by the question, suggesting she wouldn’t ask Trump that, and suggesting she was the puppet in this conversation: “Is that a question from you, or is that coming from the State Department of the U.S. government?” Welker's interviews with Trump are more combative than the communists get. She insisted to her Cuban guest that "I ask very hard questions of President Trump." The Sunday shows suddenly turned on Rep. Eric Swalwell over new allegations of sexual assault and misconduct reported by CNN and the San Francisco Chronicle. There was investigative reporting -- but there was also curious timing, since Democrats are lagging in California's "jungle primary" for governor, and it's possible the top two vote-getters for the general election could both be Republicans. Getting Swalwell out gives the Democrats more of a fighting chance. Democrats at first seemed to want him out of the governor's race, but not Congress. That all changed on Monday, and Swalwell is leaving his House seat. In his latest study of guests on ABC's The View, Nick found it was overwhelmingly liberal again -- 27 to 1 over the first three months of 2026. The one somewhat Republican guest was former reality-TV star Spencer Pratt, who's running for Mayor of Los Angeles on the single local issue of Mayor Karen Bass's poor recovery efforts after the devastating Palisades wildfire. We also discussed MS NOW host Lawrence O'Donnell's recent bender on how the president's youngest son Barron Trump should really be serving in the armed forces during the war in Iran. Eric Swalwell’s latest scandal has social media being flooded with flashback videos of the congressman’s past comments on the type of crimes he’s now being accused of committing. The congressman’s first brush with serious public scandal was in 2020 when Axios broke the news of his past close relationship with a Chinese intelligence operative, prompting suspicions he had slept with a spy. On Friday, The San Francisco Chronicle reported allegations by one of Swalwell’s former staffers that he had twice sexually assaulted her while she worked for him. The House Ethics Committee has launched an investigation into the allegations and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is investigating whether Swalwell sexually assaulted a former staffer at a hotel in New York City two years ago and called on other possible victims to contact his office. Then, on Sunday, Fox News reported that Swalwell is under investigation regarding a complaint filed with federal authorities accusing the Democrat of knowingly employing an illegal alien as a nanny, lying about her immigration status and paying her under the table using campaign funds. '60 Minutes' Platforms Leftist Catholic Cardinals Bashing Trump, 'Lawless' ICE The elitist media’s treatment of the Catholic Church is entirely ideological. When Catholic leaders take moral positions Democrats favor, they are heroes. When they sound moral alarms that Republicans favor, they are either disparaged or ignored (more often ignored). On Sunday’s 60 Minutes, the apparently mandatory anti-Trump segment was an interview with three Cardinals everyone associated with “progressive” Pope Francis – Blasé Cupich of Chicago, Robert McElroy of Washington DC, and Joseph Tobin of Newark. The two big anti-Trump topics were the war in Iran and mass deportation. There were no questions on abortion or gender ideology or nuns suing the Democrat governor of New York. Norah O’Donnell, who was granted an interview with Pope Francis in 2024 – where she also hammered on immigration and called on the pontiff to denounce “climate deniers” (he called them “foolish”) – was back to provide another platform for the leftist-pleasing prelates. O'Donnell noted that Pope Leo "appeared" to be criticizing Pete Hegseth in a Palm Sunday homily. CBS quoted Hegseth, and typically failed to note Hegseth was quoting from the Psalms. She asked "Is this a just war?" Cardinal McElroy hit the right note for CBS: "No. Under Catholic teaching, this is not a just war." But O'Donnell deserves some credit for noting "Iran has been the chief exporter of terror. Is there no scenario in which preventing that can be a just war?" The answer was contradictory: McElroy said "It's an abominable regime, and it should be removed," but it's still an unjust war somehow. On "60 Minutes," Norah O'Donnell provided a platform for the "progressive" Cardinals to bash Trump. But McElroy contradicted himself about Iran, the world's leader exporting terror. Then they shifted to deportations. O'Donnell noted Cardinal Tobin called ICE a "lawless organization," sounding exactly like Democrats. She asked: "Why did you do that?" He claimed "I didn’t say that they were people without law. But when people act in this way, when they have to hide their identities to terrify people, when they can actually violate other guarantees of our Constitution and Bill of Rights, well, I think somebody's got to call that out and I'm not the only one." O'Donnell did not ask whether an illegal immigrant is "lawless," or whether sneaking into our country is sinful in any way. They just moved on, to Cardinal McElroy complaining that "fear" of deportation is causing smaller attendance at Spanish-language masses. O'Donnell noted McElroy thought the border was "getting out of control" under Biden, but now the government is rounding up "people who have been living good, strong lives." Again O'Donnell pushed back a bit: On CBS, Norah O'Donnell noted Cardinal Tobin called ICE a "lawless organization." It was widely discussed. And yet President Trump won the Catholic vote over Kamala Harris handily, 55 to 43 percent. He promised to secure the border. He talked about deportation. And a majority of Catholics voted for the policy. CUPICH: I would like to know what Catholics feel about this indiscriminate mass deportation. I think that it’s very clear the American people are saying, "We really didn't vote for this." This is where church leaders sound more like Sunday-morning pundits than moral witnesses. Maybe Catholics voted for Trump because of those other undiscussed issues -- abortion, LGBTQ, religious freedom. Finally, O'Donnell could not suppress several grins over the optics of the American-born pope spending July 4 on the Italian island of Lampedusa to sympathize with all the migrants arriving there to spread out over Europe. How deliciously anti-Trump! O'DONNELL: Pope Leo will spend July 4th in Lampedusa, Italy, a site where tens of thousands of migrants land on their way to Europe every year. It's America's 250th birthday. Do you think the Holy Father is sending a message, Cardinal, with that visit? CUPICH: He's sending a message that his top priority right now is to be with those who are downcast and marginalized. Then came the sappy Statue of Liberty reference: On '60 Minutes,' Norah O'Donnell couldn't suppress the grins over the Pope spending the Fourth of July on an Italian island where immigrants land. Cardinal Tobin gushed: "I know at least one member of my archdiocese that will be happy and she's green."
