Data from Garrett J. Levin et al. suggests that stachydrine catabolism contributes to optimal root nodule symbiosis between #Sinorhizobium meliloti and #Medicago sativa in the context of both a minimal and a wild-type genomic background. Learn more: https://doi.org/10.1094/MPMI-02-25-0021-SC

Last Saturday was @bsbibotany.bsky.social #BIBConf25 but in 1965 BSBI conference was in Birmingham. Found report in Amnesty bookshop! JL Fyfe of PBI Cambridge talked about Lucerne, Sickle Medick and hybrids 🤗 Alas no references ☹️

Silly places to put rare plants in #Icklingham, #Suffolk #Brecks:
A white flowered form of Sand Lucerne, #Medicago sativa varia, in the middle of a cinder track;
Small Nightshade, #Solanum triflorum, in the middle of the combine access track into a barley field at harvest time! 🙄

👀Honestly a bit surprised that the coming together of 2 of Canada's big COVID-19 investments in domestic vaccine production, both of which were the subject of controversy, seems to have attracted essentially zero media coverage (tho it's true the #Medicago angle isn't apparent in the press release).

In an intriguing mix of two big Canadian pandemic investments that have yet to deliver, Canada's publicly-owned Biologics Manufacturing Centre ( #BMC) now has a deal with Aramis Biotechnologies (the company that currently owns the #Medicago IP, facilities etc.). 🏭💉

Second box: Expression measure (STAR/Salmon) using the nf-core/rnaseq pipeline. Third box: data normalized with the TMM method from EdgeR package. Fourth box: Normalized values, gene annotations and dataset metadata are consolidated into a database made of parquet files accessible through an API to feed the web interface. Kind of interesting that the Canadian government's announcement of $40 million in funding for Aramis/ #Medicago 2.0 is getting press en français (e.g., ici.radio-canada.ca/nouvelle/212... & www.lesoleil.com/actualites/s...) but not much attention in English.

Government of Canada announces investment in Québec-based Aramis Biotechnologies - Canada.ca Its project will maintain, advance and expand world-leading Canadian science focused on plant-based vaccine production

Interesting to see Canada investing $40 million in essentially Medicago 2.0, after making a big investment in #Medicago, then scrambling to keep the IP in Canada after foreign owner Mitsubishi Chemical Group shut it down.
How is Aramis addressing the concerns that led to WHO rejecting its vaccine?

A photo used as first slide in a talk: 'Encounters with the Flora of the Icklingham Triangle and Beyond' labelled 'Icklingham Triangle looking north.' Photo shows yellow-green grassy field sloping from right to left with distant pines and needles from an overhanging pine above. There is a gorse bush on the left and distant brown sheep beyond which a yellow AA van is driving along a road.

Look forward to meeting you! My talk to #Suffolk #Naturalists will be 'Encounters with the Flora of the Icklingham Triangle and Beyond', but will include geology behind why you can see an AA van in this photo.
