Black-and-white portrait of American journalist and cultural critic H. L. Mencken (1880–1956), known for his sharp wit and skepticism toward mass democracy. The quote below, published in The Baltimore Evening Sun on July 26, 1920, reads: “As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people.
