I just finished "Mexican Gothic" by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. If you love the vibes of Dracula and The Corpse Bride and the family tension of Wuthering Heights, I'd recommend this book though content warnings for racism, sexual assault, and incest.

Delightfully creepy and compelling, We Have Always Lived in the Castle’s twists and turns are pretty predictable but nevertheless fun. I spent half of the book just waiting for our unreliable narrator to enact her own form of witchy justice to the cruel people who surround her. I always love Shirley Jackson’s approach to outsider characters and this is no different. The movie is not as good. 4/5

Mexican Gothic gives me strong Crimson Peak vibes in the best way. The novel is a bit of a slow burn but once it gets going it has some GNARLY twists and turns. I think it does a solid job of showing the casual-malice of colonizers and the brutality lying beneath that stoicism 3/5

I decided to start #MexicanGothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia today. I'm only about 30 pages in, so not much to report on yet.

But I do want to make a point to highlight the cover artist @miaaraujo.bsky.social for this super cool edition. It's how the book caught my eye.
