John James: My Campaign Could Be Over LANSING — After being booed at the Michigan Republican Party’s convention this weekend, Republican gubernatorial candidate John James said in a dire fundraising text last night that his campaign “could be over” soon and might “crash and burn.” MIRS reported on the text message and said that self-funder Perry Johnson’s campaign “quickly picked up this text and blasted out an email saying that the James campaign ‘is collapsing as it did when it cost Republicans up and down the ticket in both 2018 and 2020.’” Earlier this week, Johnson released new polling showing the Republican primary in a dead heat, and a poll released last week showed James at 23%, Johnson at 20%, and the rest of the candidates in the single digits. Notably, among Michigan Republicans who classify themselves as Trump/MAGA Republicans, Johnson has a 24-20% lead over James. As James fears his campaign “could be over,” The Detroit News reported this weekend that James has “missed about twice as many roll call votes as any other Michigan member of Congress since the start of 2025.” “With an increasingly expensive primary on his hands and after getting booed this weekend, John James is spiraling—and he’s even admitting it,” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Derrick Honeyman. “This primary continues to get messier and messier.
