Fire destroys clubhouse at popular northern Michigan golf resort A popular northern Michigan golf resort has lost its clubhouse to fire. Lakewood Shores Resort, located in Oscoda in northeast Michigan, saw its clubhouse go up in flames early Wednesday morning. The fire began shortly after midnight, and crews still were battling the blaze and smoke in the late-morning hours. The cause of the fire wasn't immediately known. There were no reported injuries. Course officials quickly vowed Wednesday to rebuild the clubhouse, which serves as the main hub of the property, located off the Serradella course. Lakewood Shores also has the Gailes and Blackshire courses. Unfortunately, Lakewood Shores Resort in Oscoda suffered a devastating fire overnight that completely destroyed its clubhouse. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and the team has already expressed their commitment to rebuilding. "It's a tough day for all of us who care about Lakewood Shores," owner Kevin Aldridge said in a statement. "But we're thankful that everyone is safe, and that gives us strength to move forward. "We remain fully committed to restoring and improving the resort." It's located just off a putting green, and near the ninth and 18th greens. The clubhouse dates back to the resort's opening, in 1992. Golf season is just getting under way in northern Michigan. "The clubhouse has been an important part of our story, but Lakewood Shores is about more than anyone building," general manager Craig Peters said, in a statement posted to Facebook. "It's about the people, the courses, and the community we're proud to be a part of. We'll rebuild with that same spirit leading the way." A message left for the Oscoda Township Fire Department wasn't immediately returned Wednesday. Lakewood Shores, a 54-hole resort, used to be a crown jewel among Michigan golf destinations, especially when the Gailes, a tribute to Scottish links golf, opened in the mid-1990s. The course was hit hard by the pandemic, which cut business nearly in half, because of its popularity among Canadian golfers who couldn't cross into Michigan for months. Course conditions have been criticized by golfers, casual and avid, for the past several years, prompting Aldridge, whose family also owns the private club Indianwood in Lake Orion, to pledge improvements at Lakewood Shores.
