When you go to enjoy a baseball game, it is not always fair weather. I have been fairly fortunate in visiting baseball games in Spring and Summer days and nights without a cloud in the sky. However I was not so fortunate on this particular evening. For an obscure cold and rainy late Spring day in Chicago, I wore 3 layers — a thin shirt, a long-sleeved shirt, and a puffy vest. That along with a beanie was enough to keep my fairly warm. Although the people around me were pretty cold. Rate Field is a nice ballpark similar to the Guardians, Giants, and Orioles stadiums. The lower stands are quite close to the fair line (equivalent term of what is known as a “pitch” in international English). Much like my first foray at Progressive Field, the White Sox have not been a winning team. This and the weather gave me an opportunity for my voice to carry and be heard by the players on the field. Unlike the previous game, I had no stake in it. The White Sox were playing the Mariners. So that day, I was a White Sox fan. I am pretty sure I got the ‘Sox to eke out a 1-0 victory with my positive reinforcement yelling and clapping. There were several great double play balls that the ‘Sox players performed that were exciting. Since I had no opinion of the teams, I went ahead and left at the top of the 8th. Coincidentally, that’s when the Mariners almost came back. Since I was with the awesome people attending @MidCamp, we were going to the club area below the outfield bleachers for food prior to the game. To get to Gate 1, it is easier to walk down 35th street from the station and then along the stadium until reaching the back of the stadium rather than via Wentworth, cutting down 36th and then through the parking lot like I did. The “scran” that day was okay. The hot chicken was not in fact spicy at all, but the ribs were pretty tasty. The beer was beer. The macaroni salad was great. I did overspend on a milkshake, but that was too be expected as one of the recommended items to purchase. The bag policy at Rate Field was not great. MLB bag policies are awful. We used to be able to stuff our blankets, popcorn bags, binoculars, hats, etc... into our backpacks so we were well-prepared for any weather. But because MLB stadiums adopted this security-as-theater policy, even a small backpack is not allowed anymore.
