When the numbers on the pump roll past $5.50 a gallon, the tank swallows $170, and the guy holding the nozzle can no longer pretend he's doing this for the working class. That moment is here. And in my new cartoon, "Pump and Dump," the guy holding the nozzle is Hawaiʻi's Republican House Minority Floor Leader, Rep. Diamond Garcia. Garcia rode to office on a wave of genuine frustration—and he was right about one thing: life in Hawaiʻi has become brutally unaffordable for working families. For decades, Democratic governance has failed to meaningfully address the cost of housing, food, and transportation. That failure created an opening, and Garcia walked through it promising something different. But "something different" has turned into a Trump-shaped nightmare. In the cartoon, Garcia is filling up a Chevy Suburban—a massive gas guzzler—as President Trump addresses the nation on a screen in front of him. Trump's message is characteristically honest in its dishonesty: "Americans must remember how much money I stand to make off this war." The Suburban's pump reads $5.50/gallon. The total climbs past $170. And Garcia? He's wearing a nervous grin, the kind you flash when you've hitched your wagon to a president who openly admits he's profiting from conflict while American families bleed at the pump. This is the problem with the GOP's cost-of-living message in Hawaiʻi: it was never a serious economic plan. It was a vehicle—literally, in this case—for the same trickle-down, oil-first, billionaire-protecting policies that have made life more expensive for everyone except the donor class.
