#Belgium and #Norway’s messages at last month’s #MineBanIM remain more relevant than ever following #Ukraine’s recent announcement to withdraw from the Mine Ban Treaty.
The Mine Ban Treaty is a promise to protect civilians, preserve peace, and uphold international law. Stay in the Treaty.
Throwback to last week’s #MineBanIM.
Finland’s statement on universalization was a masterclass in double standards: explaining why they’re withdrawing from the treaty while urging others to stay committed.

There is no such thing as responsible use of AP mines. These weapons have no place in modern warfare. They don't defend borders, all they do is kill and maim civilians for years to come. NPA's Dagmar Matúšů with a strong statement on Universalization during #MineBanIM in Geneva.
Tamar Gabelnick during the #MineBanIM addressed the withdrawals, reminding states that “there are indeed limits to the ‘anything and everything’ of war. Certain red lines remain – and antipersonnel landmines should remain firmly behind them, along with other forbidden weapons like chemical weapons.”
The statements by the withdrawing States as read at the #MineBanIM will only reinforce our commitment to a mine-free world.
The announcements were not surprising, but still, it was disheartening to witness this moment and listen the justifications put forward.

From ICBL and @npaid.bsky.social event during the #MineBanIM: "These withdrawals are acts of human vandalism and proof of fake security promises. And in ten years from now, we’ll look back and regret not challenging states more forcefully. We built this norm together and we must defend it together”
We all know too well how harmful these weapons are, it is our job to defend the treaty. In ten years we don’t want to be thinking back, regretting that we didn’t challenge states withdrawing from the #APMBC more. It’s a question of human dignity, says HI’s Alma Tazlidzan at #MineBanIM
It’s a myth that AP mines protect borders. Armies no longer march across borders, using them for this purpose makes no sense. They are set to kill, responsible use is impossible, civilians don’t have maps, and mines migrate, says NPA’ Jonathon Guthrie at the #MineBanIM NPA/ICBL side event.
“Mines don’t disappear with the end of hostilities.” Since December, 414 people were killed & 592 injured by landmines & explosive remnants of war in #Syria. 30% of the victims were children. - Raed Al-Saleh, Minister for Environment, Emergencies, Disaster Management #MineBanIM
