Mechanism Mirror propaganda leverages a form of psychological projection to achieve several goals simultaneously: • Creates confusion: By accusing an opponent of something they have not done, the propagandist can distract the public and force their opponent into a defensive position. • Normalizes the perpetrator's actions: When the propagandist systematically employs this tactic, serious allegations can become desensitized to the public, making it harder to distinguish truth from falsehood. • Justifies future actions: By framing their opponent as a threat, the propagandist can justify their own aggressive behavior as a form of "collective self-defense".
Psychological effect The power of mirror propaganda lies in its ability to manipulate emotions like moral outrage and fear. When a person hears a shocking accusation, their immediate emotional response can sometimes override their critical thinking. This makes them vulnerable to manipulation, especially when the tactic is used repetitively.
