Tristan's Travel Tips: Tryst Hospitality CEO on what LGBTQ+ travelers should know It’s been a banner year for Tristan Schukraft. The CEO of Tryst Hospitality (and MISTR and “everything gay”) has expanded his Tryst Hotels portfolio. Soon there will be properties in Fire Island, Provincetown, Wilton Manors, and Rio de Janeiro — that’s in addition to his hotels in San Juan and Puerto Vallarta as well as The Abbey in West Hollywood. He’s also launching the inaugural Tryst Fitness in Puerto Vallarta. With business (and vacations) happening around the globe, the jet-setting Schukraft is also a seasoned out traveler. Below, he shares some tips for those embarking on queer adventures in 2026. The pool deck at Tryst Puerto VallartaTryst Hospitality **What is your checklist for a dream destination?** My dream destination has to be gay, have great nightlife, and be somewhere tropical. I want to party at night, eat well, and wake up near the ocean. If a place can deliver all three, I’m already booking it. **What is your favorite place to visit?** Rio is my favorite place to visit. The energy is sexy, the beaches are unbeatable, and the men are absolutely gorgeous. But I love Puerto Vallarta because it has everything I look for every day: friendly people, gay nightlife, great food, and a community that feels like home. **What’s your worst memory as an out traveler?****** When I was in a throuple and hotels refused to let three men share one bed. They kept insisting we book multiple rooms. It was a good reminder of why LGBTQ–owned hotels are important. Tryst Hospitality CEO Tristan SchukraftTryst Hospitality **The best?** The best was proposing to [my fiancé] Melvin at the South Pole in Antarctica. It might be the first engagement ever there. You can only take your gloves off for about 30 seconds before risking frostbite, so it was the quickest and coldest gay moment of my life, but absolutely unforgettable. **What is your top essential to pack?** My boyfriends. I travel everywhere with them because we always have a good time together. **Your favorite nonessential?** Sugar-free Red Bull. Not every hotel, bar, or nightclub carries it, and I don’t go anywhere without a few cans. Sonja Morgan with Tristan Schukraft and fiancé Melvin Alexander (left) at High Tea Labor Day WeekendJulian Lazaro for Tryst Hospitality **You often travel with a group. What do you love most about seeing the world with other queer people?****** Everything is more fun with friends. Traveling should feel fun, sexy, and a little ridiculous, and my boys always deliver that. Seeing the world together just makes every destination better. **Any advice for avoiding gay group drama?****** Do not travel with six boyfriends and 20 suitcases, because the luggage drama alone will ruin the trip. I used to be able to travel weeks with a single carry-on, but my boyfriends can’t, so I gave up, and now I have a bag just for shoes. Keep it light, keep it fun, and never let a carry-on come between you and a good time. You can always shop when you get there. **What have you learned from traveling that you bring to your work in Tryst Hospitality?****** Real luxury is the freedom to be yourself without ever looking over your shoulder. The best experiences come from staff who celebrate you exactly as you are. That is the energy I bring to every Tryst Hospitality property. A rendering of the Tryst San Juan after renovationsTryst Hospitality **In your view, what qualities make a gay resort excellent?****** A great gay resort is high-energy, sexy, and fun. If the vibe is right, the music is good, and everyone feels free to be themselves, you have the perfect destination. You should be able to be your best self, even on your worst behavior. **What travel are you looking forward to in 2026?****** In 2026, I am most excited about Rio and Provincetown as we develop Tryst Hotels there. We are planning a huge Fourth of July weekend blowout in Provincetown and an unforgettable New Year’s Eve in Rio. I am also looking forward to celebrating The Abbey’s 35th anniversary in May and the 60th anniversary of the Tea Dance in Fire Island this summer. **Any final words of wisdom for out travelers?****** Book the trip. Life only gets better when you go. Make the time to see the world. _**Learn more about Tryst Hospitality’s roster of LGBTQ-owned properties attrysthotels.com.**_ _**_This article is part of OUT’s Jan-Feb 2026 issue, which hits newsstands January 27._**_**_Support queer media and subscribe_**_** _— or download the issue through Apple News+, Zinio, Nook, or PressReader._**_ _**_ _**_

Kim Petras rings in 2026 with a resolution to fight sexual health stigma Kim Petras rang in the New Year at The Abbey with a message about sexual health. The "Unholy" singer thrilled a packed crowd at the West Hollywood gay bar Wednesday night by performing a selection of her hits. And when the clock struck midnight, Petras officially began her tenure as a MISTR Ambassador, supporting the national telehealth platform and its efforts to expand access to PrEP, DoxyPEP, and STI testing. The New Year’s Eve celebration — also headlined by Grammy-nominated producer Margo XS — marked the beginning of a partnership that, through 2026, will see the transgender icon starring in a major brand campaign for MISTR along with select appearances. Additionally, MISTR will support Petras's hotly anticipated third album, _Detour_ , with fan events. _Detour_ is expected to launch in early 2026. “MISTR is changing the way we talk about sexual health by making it open, accessible, and real," Petras said in a statement. "We’re celebrating together on New Year’s Eve at The Abbey and continuing that momentum into 2026. Sexual health should be normalized, not whispered about, and MISTR is leading that shift.” “Kim is fearless and unapologetically sex-positive,” said Tristan Schukraft, founder and CEO of MISTR (and owner of The Abbey). “Her confidence, playfulness, and stigma-free approach to life align perfectly with our mission at MISTR to make sexual healthcare accessible and free. With her new album, Kim is entering a freer, more powerful chapter, and we’re excited to celebrate this new era together.” MISTR provides free PrEP, which has been shown to reduce the risk of HIV by 99 percent if taken as a daily tablet, to both insured and uninsured patients. The telehealth platform (and its sibling brand SISTR) also provides free testing and DoxyPEP, a treatment that can reduce the rate of other STIs. Previously, Petras appeared at another MISTR event at The Abbey, the launch of National PrEP Day, which used the star power of surprise performer Dua Lipa to help boost awareness and enrollment. Learn more at heymistr.com. And see Petras lead the countdown to a sexually healthier 2026 ahead. > Rang in 2026 with @kimpetras at @TheAbbeyWeHo! pic.twitter.com/galgIssulh > — Daniel Reynolds (@dnlreynolds) January 1, 2026

It’s National PrEP Day! Learn the latest about HIV prevention Today is the first National PrEP Day — a new annual event dedicated to spreading information and awareness around HIV prevention. The special day was launched by MISTR, the largest telehealth platform for sexual health in the U.S., and its companion platform, SISTR (which provides services specifically for trans and cis women). Currently, these are the only national services that allow anyone to order HIV prevention drugs, or PrEP, discreetly online at no cost, with or without insurance. The groundbreaking campaign has employed social media, local events, and celebrity support to reach its goal of getting 10,000 new people to sign up for PrEP in just 10 days. MISTR is an online platform that lets you order PrEP for free.MISTR “We already have the tools to end HIV: the science, the medication, and the technology. What’s missing is the will, the access, and the equity,” said Tristan Schukraft, founder and CEO of MISTR, in a statement. “National PrEP Day is about making HIV prevention visible, stigma-free, and accessible to everyone.” Now that you’ve learned about National PrEP Day, what about PrEP itself? What exactly is it and how does it work? Who should be on PrEP? Worry not — we have the answers to these questions and more. Read on to arm yourself with the latest facts. ## What is PrEP? PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a method of using certain medicines to prevent the transmission of HIV. When taken consistently and correctly, PrEP can reduce the risk of acquiring HIV by up to 99 percent. ## Should I be on PrEP? According to HIV.gov, PrEP is recommended for HIV-negative people who have had anal or vaginal sex in the past 6 months __and__ … * have been with a sexual partner with HIV (especially if the partner has an unknown or detectable viral load) * have not consistently used a condom * have been diagnosed with an STD in the past 6 months PrEP is also recommended for those who inject drugs and have an injection partner with HIV, or those who share needles, syringes, or any injection equipment with others. Even if these behaviors don’t apply to you, you may still want the security of PrEP. Also, those with an HIV-positive partner who are considering getting pregnant should get on PrEP. Ultimately, if you’re unsure, talk to a health care provider to help you make the right choice for you. ## What are the different types of PrEP? There are currently four different types of PrEP available in the U.S. The latest game-changing breakthrough came earlier this year when the Food and Drug Administration approved the drug lenacapavir, an injectable that only has to be administered twice a year. Here’s a breakdown of the four forms of PrEP: * **Yeztugo** (lenacapavir) is for adults and adolescents at risk of HIV through sex who weigh at least 77 pounds (35 kg). It is an injection given by your health care provider twice yearly instead of daily pills. The starter dose includes oral pills that need to be taken for the first two days. * **Apretude** (cabotegravir) is for adults and adolescents at risk for HIV who weigh at least 77 pounds (35 kg). Approved by the FDA in 2021, Apretude was the first injectable option for HIV prevention. It’s administered by a health care provider every other month instead of daily oral pills. * **Truvada** (emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate), a once-daily pill, is __ our great PrEP pioneer. FDA-approved in 2012, it was the first medicine available in the U.S. for use to prevent HIV transmission. * **Descovy** (emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide), another once-daily pill approved in 2019, is for sexually active men or trans women at risk of getting HIV. Descovy is not approved for people assigned female at birth who are at risk for HIV through receptive vaginal sex. **See which of your favorite celebs are supporting National PrEP Day:** > See on Instagram **__ __** **__To learn more about HIV prevention and treatment, visit__ ____hiv.gov__ __.
