A blue heron wading near shore in the Salish Sea on a clear blue morning, tall & erect as it watches the water ahead of it.

The same heron, now with its head canted downward as it focuses & listens to something in the water below it. Its silhouette on the water is reflected perfectly in reverse.

Suddenly, with the speed of a rattlesnake strike, the heron has plunged its head into the water, submerging its entire neck.

The heron lifts its head from the water, carrying a long, wriggling creature in its stiletto-like bill.
