A photo of a page from the Susan Stryker zine. On the page is an image of the bride of Frankenstein with text above it. The text reads "rage colors me as it presses in through the pores of my skin, soaking in until it becomes the blood that courses through my beating heart. It is a rage bred by the necessity of existing in external circumstances that work against my survival"

Best seminar topic for discussion this week.

How does the golem compare to other human created beings like Frankenstein or AI?

Students did not disappoint in their reflections.

This book described badly: a field guide to the beings humanity populates the shadows with.

Fun to have around. It's a book that makes the world feel magical.

I used to teach Gothic lit. I centered my classes around J. J. Cohen's "Monster Theory." In his 7 theses, he states, among other things, that culture creates monsters against which to fight, making culture the monster.
