Next week on January 25th is MOOSE DAY!
#MooseDay
βMoose, abundant in the dense forests of the Anishinaabe territories, serve as a crucial source of food for many Anishinaabeg. Moreover, various parts of the moose - its hide, fur, antlers, and more - are employed in the fabrication of drums, artistic creations, and an assortment of tools. Unsurprisingly, then, the moose is a frequent subject of the Anishinaabe painters of this time. In this work by Goyce Kakegamic, the moose - while undeniably abstract - is so rendered with such earnestness that it seems to have life from within the page. Similarly, the stately creature is coloured with a sonorous palette that it seems to have an inner luminescence.β
