fab few days exhibiting #mudlarking finds and giving poetry readings at Waterman’s Hall. the Company of Watermen and Lightermen of the River Thames was founded in 1514, when the earliest Act of Parliament for regulating watermen, wherrymen and bargemen received Royal Assent from King Henry VIII.

They're currently been worked on, so one of the basins is now empty of water, giving a change to see parts of them you'd never usually get to see. I bet there's some interesting stuff hidden in all that mud!

Not sure why some days I find loads of fascinating fragments and other days… very little. It might be the way the sunlight picks out bright objects, or my timing, or my mood. It doesn’t matter. The time spent exploring the foreshore is the real treasure. #mudlarking

Two matched little beads, though of slightly different size found some distance apart on the foreshore. Part of a broken necklace? #mudlarking

Spot the find!
Will I go to the gym and do that exercise where you shuffle side to side that’s really good for your hips? Absolutely the fuck not.

Will I go to the beach and kick thousands of pounds of shingle aside because I thought I saw a pipe stem over here? Absolutely yes.

gloved hand holding battered a very muddy queen conch shell with foreshore rubble in background

gloved hand holding battered a very muddy queen conch shell with foreshore rubble in background

tide-battered and worm-eaten after a few centuries in the Thames, this was once a venerable creature, a gentle vegetarian grazing on sea grasses. an endangered species now, queen conch has long been an important food source for humans, sea turtles and octopus 🐙 #mudlarking

battered conch shell eroding out of the Thames foreshore

battered conch shell eroding out of the Thames foreshore

Aliger gigas, aka queen conch, a large sea snail native to the Caribbean. found eroding out of the Thames foreshore. the thicker the flared lip, the older the conch. this one was very old and almost certainly already dead when shovelled into a ship’s hold to serve as ballast. #mudlarking

It’s been on for a year but I only just snuck into the Secrets of the Thames: Mudlarking London’s Lost Treasures exhibition @wearelondonmuseum in the final hours. So glad I did, an excellent summary of what was fairly niche only a decade ago, but is now hugely popular. This was something of a greatest hits of the finds on the shores of the river, and was absolutely rammed

Update: Whilst the main repairs to the campshed have now been completed, there remain works to be completed & the exclusion zone remains in place. The website will be updated when the foreshore is reopened.
