Happy #DrinkWineDay ! This decanter once belonged to Simon Willard Jr.; I can only imagine what it contained when it was in use.

John Ritto Penniman's Signature on reverse of portrait
It is John Penniman's birthday!
I mentioned Penniman earlier this week. He had an interesting life which intersects with those of the Willards when he began painting clock dials. He may have rented space in Aaron Willard's manufactory/stable as well.

"Why won't you go faster?"
We know this is not what they meant when they created #PunchTheClockDay , but we couldn't resist.

It is #MiniatureMonday !
Simon Willard Junior (1795-1874) painted by G. Harvey 1828-1830. Interestingly, this portrait has a little compartment on the back that contains a lock of hair; we are not sure whose it is.

This is a tower clock from the tower of the Second Church of Marshfield, Massachusetts. It was made by Aaron Willard Jr. in 1838/9 and was recouped and reassembled in the 1970s after the building burnt down.

#MuseumsUnlocked, day 120: #North.
Greenlander, explorer, anthropologist, story teller. From the town museum of #Ilulissat (69° N), where he was born in 1879: #KnudRasmussen’s leather jacket.
#MuseumsUnlocked Day 120 - the #north make me think of my visits to Norges arktiske universitetsmuseum in Tromsø: https://en.uit.no/tmu
Today’s #Neolithic day at #MuseumsUnlocked - so why not take another little (virtual) tour through the exhibition of Sanliurfa‘s archaeological museum @SMuzesi in #Turkey, having a closer look at the finds from the Pre-Pottery Neolithic sites of #GöbekliTepe and #NevaliCori ...
'Notes on Gesture (for H.C.)' (2015). A series of 34 photographs, each of which replicates a pose made by the female character (played by Hélène Chatelain) in Chris Marker's 'La Jetée'. While her hand gestures were replicated, her facial expressions were not.

#MuseumsUnlocked Day 116 - #Masks: I always liked the exhibition "Masks of the South Seas" in the @MARKKhamburg markk-hamburg.de/en/ausstellungen/masks-o...
Refreshing the discussion on the interpretation of early #Neolithic #masks (and #masquerade) for today‘s #MuseumsUnlocked ... with a glimpse into the #sketchbook - and some examples from #GöbekliTepe (meanwhile on display at @SMuzesi).
More here:...
Oh, and also seizing the opportunity to dig up this little thread here about a visit of Nansen‘s and Amundsen‘s "#Fram" - and Oslo‘s @FramMuseum for this #MuseumsUnlocked on ships and boats. ⚓️
#Kayaks (and #anoraks as suitable kayaking gear) from #Greenland as seen in Copenhagen‘s @Nationalmuseet for this #MuseumsUnlocked - which is about ships, boats and sailing today.
And see, already learned two Greenlandic words this way: #qajaq and #annoraaq. 😉
#MuseumsUnlocked Day 115 - #ships: The Oseberg ship, the Gokstad ship and the Tune ship of the Vikingshiphuset in Oslo, Norway, can be visited virtually: https://t.co/C0V6UoT7tX (The Oseberg ship is my peronal favorite... :-) https://t.co/fXua4xYkgT
The 15,000 y/o face scratchings from #LaMarche in #France somehow almost feel like modern caricatures to me.
I bet those involved did very well recognize who was depicted here ... and had a good chuckle - somehow fitting for today's #MuseumsUnlocked on humour. 😉
#MuseumsUnlocked Day 106 - #WWI: The exhibition on early days of flight @DeutschesMuseum shows airplanes from World War One - along with many interesting facts about flying... www.deutsches-museum.de/en/exhibitions/transport...

#MuseumsUnlocked 103 - Bronze
Today's #MuseumsUnlocked theme is bronze, so enjoy the oldest known inscribed bell in #Japan, which dates to 698 and belongs to Myōshinji 妙心寺 in Kyoto. It's also the oldest bell in the world still in use. It stands about 1.5m (5 ft) tall and weighs about 830 kg (1,830 lbs). 🔔
