Four East Canadian Inuit kayaks shown in profile and plan, highlighting the piecing together of skins of different colors for 'pleasing effect.' The mid-tone represents skins scraped of their grain or epidermis, whereas the black are skins de-haired, but unscripted. The white are skins further bleached to achieve a bright cream almost whitish coloration. A. is from Kinglet; B. is from Mittimatalik; C. is from Kangirsuk; D. is from East Hudson Bay (Ittivimmiut). Inuit women prepared the sealskins for kayak covers, and they sewed them together and then onto kayak frames. This is an illustration for a book I am writing, based on my research with full-size kayaks in museums and historic/ethnographical and first-hand accounts.
