I’ll be reviving #MustelidMonday in December. Stay tuned if you’re into fun facts about the weasel family. 📷 Nick Zimmer

The LTW doesn’t dig its own den, it uses one abandoned by a rodent. They are obligate carnivores & while they will occasionally scavenge they prefer their meals fresh. To make their home cozy they line their dens with fur, making full use of their kills. Very sustainable! 5/x #MustelidMonday 🦤🌱🌎

People don’t have tapetum lucidum. That red eye you sometimes see in ppl pictures is light reflecting off our retinas. If you ever see someone with “eye shine” of any color … well, you might want to find the nearest exit cuz hon, that’s not who you think it is. #MustelidMonday 🦤🌱🌎

#MustelidMonday 🦤🌱🌎Long-tailed weasel (Neogale frenata) Can be found from Canada south to northern South America. It’s a little bigger than its short tailed cousin (which originated in Eurasia before coming to the Americas a ~500ky ago). The LTW got a new genus in 2021. 1/x. x.com/ap_magazine/...

I was thinking about today’s #MustelidMonday 🦤🌍🧪 while reading the news and started to wonder about what mustelids live in Ukraine, Israel, & Gaza. Meet the marbled polecat (Vormela peregusna). Doesn’t it look like a cross between a ferret & a box turtle with oversized Elmo ears? 📷 Wikipedia 1/

Badgers often, though not always, dig small pits to make latrines in which to defecate (poop!) These are important to badger social life and can be used to mark the edge of territorial boundaries.

Male Eurasian otters (Lutra lutra) usually weigh 8-10kg and are around 110-120cm in length (although roughly 44-48cm of that is tail!). Females tend to be a little smaller weighing in at 6-8kg and measuring 100-110 cm in length

Much of an otter's diet is made up of fish and they are particularly fond of eels, but they are very adaptable and also eat inverts (e.g. crayfish, crabs, water beetles), frogs, waterbirds, small mammals and sometimes even snakes!

Polecats are a similar shape to their relatives the stoats and weasels (long body, short legs, mid length tail) but are considerably larger with a big male potentially reaching nearly 60cm in length and 1.5kg in weight.

Earthworms are one the most important foods for badgers, and can make up nearly half of their diet. But they are opportunistic and will also eat other insects, fruits, plants and small mammals when available.
