My hubby’s found which I’m 99% sure is tawaka, growing on a willow root by Waiwhetu river. It is a large brown mushroom that is darker brown in the middle, tan toward the outside, and dark and wrinkly around the edges. The willow root is surrounded by grass.
A few days ago I was saying I wanted to find out what the name of tawaka mushroom means.
I did. It’s because it grows on the tawa tree. Of course.

Tawaka? Found in a willow root. If it is, we would like to taste it but can’t find any useful articles on whether it has lookalikes.
