Original vs brick-walled remaster audio recordings Partial screenshot of an audio editor software split in half (top/bottom). In the top half, a part of a waveform is shown that is labeled "original 1986 cd). The wave form is smaller in overall height, but the difference between the highs and lows are distinct. The bottom half of the image is the waveform of the same song, but it is labeled "Unknown ressue/remaster". The waveform is brick-walled (adjusted and compressed where the wave form solidly, and continuously hits the minimum and maximum limits with no distinct highs or lows because they're all highs. The Dynamic range of the original CD is 12 (dB, I believe), whereas the reissue/remaster is only 7.
I cannot wait until we stop doing this to music recordings. Everyone loses in the loudness war.
